POST-HOME BUYING PROCESS

The home buying process continues post-closing! This  step-by-step guide will help ensure your move-in setup goes smoothly:

Part 1: Moving.

Write down the details of your move, your new and old address, time, date, etc. - so you have this information on hand when you look for movers.

  • How many boxes?

  • How many pieces of each type of furniture

  • Does the mover need to pack anything for you?

  • Are there stairs? An elevator?

  • Will the movers provide boxes?

Then put together a list of vendors. Ultimately, you want at least 3 different quotes from moving companies. You can pull sources from referrals from your friends, Yelp, and Angie’s List. Be prepared for possible overages, as things may not pan out as expected.

Part 2: Utility services.

Some utility services are more straightforward than others, while others will require you to be present during installation. List of utility services to check:

  • Home phone

  • Internet

  • Cable/satellite

  • Water

  • Heating/cooling

  • Electricity

  • Home security

  • Pool service

  • Landscaping

  • Pest control

  • Snow removal

Part 3: Security.

Change your locks and make enough key copies for everyone that needs a set.

Part 4: Address change.

Head to the USPS website to record an official change of address. You can also sign up for a mail forwarding service for a small fee. You should also make a list of any institution that has your address and update your address in their systems. This may include:

  • Banks

  • Insurance company

  • Employer

  • Subscriptions / delivery services (Amazon, etc.)
